About Mittenwald

Alpine hostel at 1,000m in protected meadows, sauna, mountain views

HI Mittenwald occupies a modern Alpine building at 1,000 metres altitude in the Buckelwiesen nature reserve, where protected wildflower meadows bloom with lady's slipper orchids, gentian, and alpine roses. The 110-bed hostel has 22 rooms ranging from 3-bed privates to larger dorms, all with wooden floors and shared bathrooms in the hallways. A winter garden frames views of the Zugspitze and Karwendel mountains, while the 10-person sauna (by appointment, fees apply) provides post-hike muscle relief.

The hostel sits 4 km north of Mittenwald's baroque town centre, where violin-making workshops line streets decorated with Lüftlmalerei frescos. The Kranzberg cable car starts within walking distance for summit hikes to 1,391m, while the Leutasch Ghost Gorge offers suspended walkways through limestone cliffs 30 minutes away. In winter, Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski slopes are 20 minutes by car, with equipment rental and lift pass sales at the hostel.
