Hostel Aurora by Goiglo is located amidst the beautiful lake scenery of Kuusamo, just a few minutes from the town center and the airport, and a short drive from the Ruka Ski Resort. This former Finnish Border Guard Headquarters has been given a new life as a modern, cosy, and easily accessible hostel where the history of independent Finland, the peace of nature, and modern comfort come together.
The old barracks building now houses a warm and welcoming contactless hostel with 30 rooms and around 70 beds. Accommodation options suit many needs – from hotel-standard rooms with private bathrooms to hostel-style rooms with shared facilities. All room rates include a generous breakfast and evening sauna.
The lake glimmers right next to the hostel grounds: you can go fishing, relax by the campfire, play volleyball, or enjoy a round of frisbee golf. In winter, you can access the city’s cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails directly from the yard. Hostel Aurora by Goiglo is also an excellent spot for admiring the Northern Lights, and you might even see reindeer wandering through the yard.
History is still present within the hostel walls. The building tells the story of the time when it served as the headquarters of the Kuusamo Border Jäger Company and as a Border Guard Station. Guests can explore old photographs, artifacts, and newspaper clippings from the headquarters’ active years.
The hostel features a well-equipped shared kitchen, an exercise room, and free parking. Additional services such as car heating outlets, EV charging, laundry facilities, and a private sauna are available for an extra fee. Pets are also welcome.
