Here are some answers to the most popular questions about HI membership and discounts.

What are the member benefits? Why should I become a member? 
Being a member of Hostelling International has many benefits and savings. Only HI members have access to member-only rates or discounts on accommodation costs in HI Hostels worldwide. As a member, you also have access to the only global network of Youth Hostels which meet the assured standards, giving you peace of mind. HI Hostels operate in more than 75 countries and are continually growing to meet the needs of our customers. As a member you become part of a global community of travellers just like you and meet people of all nations and cultures, share experiences and friendships. 

How can I join Hostelling International? 
You can buy membership in various places: 

  • on before your stay  
  • at the hostel when you arrive  
  • from your national Youth Hostel Association 

You will either get a digital membership pass or a plastic card, they both give you the same benefits and discounts worldwide.   
Prices can vary, so please check before to avoid surprises or disappointment.  

Will I receive a discount at all HI Hostels? 
In all HI hostels you will either have access to ‘member rates’, which are cheaper or a discount on accommodation, if you have booked directly on the hostel or national YHA website.  
If you book through an online travel agent or 3rd party, we cannot guarantee your HI membership will be honoured. 

Do I have to be a member to book online/stay at a HI hostel? 
You do not need to be a member or add your membership details online in order to make your booking.  
In some countries membership is compulsory to stay in HI hostels. Where membership is not compulsory, non-members are required to pay a small surcharge or can purchase a membership card at the hostel. Read more about membership.

What are the membership prices and types? 
Membership prices and types (Adult, Child, Family, Group, Life) can vary around the world. Please contact your National Youth Hostel Association or hostel for full details.  
On we only sell an Adult individual membership; it is valid for 12 months and prices vary depending on your place of residence as you will become a member of your National Association.  

I have lost my membership card; can I get a replacement? 
If you have purchased membership from your National Youth Hostel Association or over the counter in a hostel, please contact them to discuss this.

How can I renew my membership card? 
If you have purchased membership from your National Youth Hostel Association or over the counter in a hostel, please contact them to discuss this.  Memberships purchased on cannot be renewed. When your membership has expired, you will need to purchase a new one.

Does everyone travelling together have to hold a membership? 
Yes. Unless you have purchased a Family or Group membership.  

Can I change the details on my membership pass if they are incorrect? 
If the details on the membership pass are incorrect you can request changes, please contacts us at info[at]  

Can I cancel my membership? 
No. A membership cannot be cancelled, refunded or transferred.  
Even if you do not plan to travel there could be benefits you can use in your local area or online from our global partners

I have not received my membership pass, what can I do? 
If you have completed your purchase on but not received the confirmation email with the pass and invoice, please contact us at info[at]
