Castillo de San Servando (Toledo)

The hostel is located in a castle on the left bank of the Tagus River. Built by the Arabs and rebuilt by the Christians, once the city of Toledo was taken in 1085 by King Alfonso VI, he refounded a monastery in the fortress, dedicated to Saints Servando and Germano, in gratitude for having saved his life. in the battle of Sagrajas. The monastery lived years of abundance with the continuous possessions granted to it by the kings, until it suffered the first attack by the Almoravids in the year 1099. Which was followed by others during the first half of the following century, which caused its abandonment as a monastery, its strategic importance also declining after the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), so it was abandoned. With the fights between Pedro I and Enrique de Trastámara (14th century), it once again acquired military importance and Archbishop Tenorio ordered its reconstruction. The works finished in 1386, the remains of the building that have come down to us being from this period. In 1857 it became a powder magazine, in 1873 it was auctioned and, due to the danger of demolition, it was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1874, being the first castle to hold such a designation.

It was rebuilt again in 1959 and since then it has been a junior school, university residence, headquarters of the Cortes of Castilla La Mancha and currently a Youth Hostel.
