The school activities in Kärkölä’s Kirkonkylä, which began in 1874, ended in 2015. After a brief period of dormancy, Koulumäki came back to life with the introduction of accommodation services in 2020. Initially, the changing rooms of the gymnasium served travelers from around the world, and in the summer of 2023, the facilities expanded to include the old school building constructed in 1949. Now, Koulumäki hosts guests in five double rooms (blue room, orange room, red room, green room, and pink room) and one tent situated in the gymnasium, accommodating a total of 12 guests. Guests have access to their own kitchens both in the gymnasium and in the school building.
Each room at Koulumäki is uniquely decorated, embracing colors and details. The hostel honors old furniture and items, as well as vintage books. Maps, paintings, and various educational materials related to the school world are proudly displayed in both the old classroom and the accommodation rooms. In the gymnasium, you can play badminton, table tennis, or practice your floorball skills. Alternatively, you can hang from the gym equipment and stretch your tight shoulder muscles. In the old village school, you can draw on the blackboard or challenge your friends to a board game tournament. If you can play the piano, no one will mind a small serenade.
The facilities are also available for rent as a meeting or event space. The atmospherically decorated classroom can accommodate around twenty people, and for entertainment, there is a very wide selection of different board games for all ages.
Kärkölä’s Kirkonkylä is located in the southern corner of Päijät-Häme, in a peaceful rural setting yet close to larger cities. It is about 30 km to Lahti and exactly 100 km to Helsinki. In addition to the church, Kirkonkylä features the French village shop Mersailles and the lunch restaurant Tähkä. Other services, including grocery stores, are located in Järvelä, 5 km to the south.HOTEL-242671
