The buyer must purchase a membership from their current country of residence. A membership might be invalidated if evidence of this cannot be provided.
When a membership has been purchased, the nominated member will receive an email with an activation code and a link to activate. After supplying the required information (name, email, date of birth and address of residence), the new membership digital pass and PDF certificate will be sent by email to the member and can be used immediately.
A member must be able to present proof of a valid membership pass in way of a digital pass or PDF certificate. The hostel or partner is entitled to ask for a form of ID and to verify the validity of the membership before granting an offer.
An active membership can be cancelled and the member data erased upon request, however that does not entitle to a refund.
The membership entitles the member to ‘member rates’ in any HI hostel or to a discount on non-member accommodation charges. Please note that in some countries it is mandatory to be a member to stay in a HI hostel, more details are available here.
