Zinnwald on the border with Bohemia is the highest settlement in the east of the Erzgebirge Mountains (780-880m above sea level). Tin mining, flourishing 400 years ago, gave this place its name. Now with a population of 700 it is part of Altenberg. At Christmas time the village’s windows are illuminated by candle arches and nutcracker, angel and miner figurines look out into the cold winter night. The youth hostel is 800m above sea level in a peaceful forest location, 1km from Zinnwald.
