Majatalo Pihlajapuu is a former village school located in Salmenkylä, Nurmes. The building was completed in the 1930s and served as a school until 1998. Since 2000, the property has been owned by Äksyt Ämmät Oy.
Majatalo Pihlajapuu is also referred to as a “mummola,” which means a granny’s place, due to its individually decorated rooms and the cozy atmosphere within the house. From the beginning, the hostel has followed principles of sustainable development: it has received the Visit Finland Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) label and is additionally certified by TourCert. Majatalo Pihlajapuu is located 20 km away from the center of Nurmes.
Single and double private rooms are equipped with linens, towels, and breakfast included in the accommodation price. The rooms are decorated in different colors and named with natural themes. Would you like to sleep in the meadow-green or wild-rose-red room?
Majatalo Pihlajapuu has received the “Tervetuloa pyöräilijä” (Welcome Cyclist) symbol. The symbol is designed to make a cyclist’s life easier when seeking suitable services: places and services that a cyclist always knows they are welcome at, and that provide slightly better services for those adventuring on a bike saddle.
The log-built Bomba House is one of Nurmes’ most interesting places to explore.
